4 Key Concepts of Media
Nirujan Ganeshanathan
This media text applies key concept number 1 because it creates a luxurious reality. The story is about a wealthy business man travelling in an airplane to attend a business meeting somewhere in the world. The man is presented with the view that he has money due to his clothing; he is wearing a white suit and a scarf, as well as listening to headphones. Also, he is taking a plane to his meeting, and he is secluded in a private section or first class. The construction affects the meaning because it wants the targeted audience to believe the message of successful men wear fancy cologne and Givenchy will make u increase performance in life as said in the ad. The ad is for Givenchy. The reality created in this ad is that wealthy and successful men wear Givenchy.Step 2:
This media text applies key concept number 2 because there are two ways to digest the ad. This ad is for Mc Donald's. The intended audience are construction workers. This text appeals to construction workers because they know how much an early morning can be a drag and they usually need a coffee to wake them up. One way to view the ad is from a construction workers standpoint. A construction worker would view this advertisement as a pick up to their early mornings going to work and a Mc Donald’s premium roast coffee will help them ‘wind up” and be energetic. A student will view this ad in a different way. I would view this advertisement as it is not for me. I would not need a premium roast coffee to wake me up and get me going. I would interpret that I would not need to perform manual labour and therefore I would not need a wake up energy boost.
Step 3:
The game NHL 10 displays key concept number 3. The game NHL has in game advertisements for different companies. In the background you can 6 sideboard advertisements. You can see an eagle ad, NHL.com, CCM, Honda, Reebok, and Upper Deck ad. The intended audience are people you like or play hockey. For instance, the NHL.com and Upper Deck ads are for people who like hockey as a hobby, checking stats or collecting cards on their favourite player. The other ads are for people who play hockey, Reebok, CCM, and Eagle are sporting equipment businesses. The six ads are for different companies, but they are all connected to NHL and their game where these ads are being posted. These ads are distributed to the public by the game NHL 10. NHL profits from all these ads. The money earned from these ads can be put into more production of the game or for more profits. I think that it is put towards profits because when you are connected to the online service such as; Xbox 360 live or PSN, the ads change periodically. Therefore, the company can keep posting more ads and gain more money.
Step 4:
This advertisement displays key concept number 4 because it demonstrates a good value of life. This ad is for Ally Bank. The man in the ad asks the first girl if she wanted a pony, she said yes and then he gave her a small toy pony. The man then asks a second girl the same thing, she replied with yes and he gave her a real pony. The narrator then relays the message, “Even Kids know it’s wrong to hold out on somebody.” This ad shows the ideological values of the good life where truth and honesty are key. I share these values as a teenager and I think that everyone should value these as well. The message means that if a child knows it is wrong to hold out on someone, so why do adults not value to the same things. The message is communicated to an adult audience using a child point of view. This creates a deeper understanding that this simple value can be understood and demonstrated to a child and that this bank has good values. Therefore it would be right for adults to sign up with this bank.

This was very interesting and I never considered looking at these ads as stories. I have a question though, how is this text distributed or sold to the public?
ReplyDeleteThe advertisement for Givenchy cologne is a great choice for the first key concept, however, one could also analyse this media text as a value/social message.
ReplyDeleteI really like ads that you chose for this activity. But I think next time you should state what the key concept is in each paragraph so the reader will know what you are trying to deconstruct in each paragraph.
